P. Rotola-Pukkila Oy’s environmental programme aims at environmentally friendly and long-term solutions in waste management, energy policy and the use of raw materials and supplies. This environmental programme has been in use since the early 1990s. Learn more about our environmental programme below.

Packaging waste
We manufacture almost everything ourselves in our factory, i.e. we buy mainly basic, raw materials from external partners, which do not require much packaging material for transport. We sort all cardboard and paper and send it to recycling facilities. The metal bands used for raw material packaging are either re-used or shredded, stored and sent for further recycling. Plastic packaging is sorted and partially reused as packaging material for export shipments, and the rest is delivered to a local waste management company for energy generation.
Waste from production
All waste from production is combustible and we use it for our own energy production in a modern heating system. This system has been approved by the environmental authorities.
Other waste
Other waste is generated in only very small quantities and is handled by local waste management companies.
Hazardous waste
Due to the nature of our operations, we also generate very little hazardous waste. All hazardous waste is sorted and sent to a waste management company. We sort the oils from our transport equipment and gas trucks into black oils, and oil filters into solid oil waste. Used rechargeable batteries are sorted and stored before being sent to a waste management facility. All so-called “clear oils” are sorted separately for reuse. Fluorescent tubes and single-use batteries are sorted for recycling.
Very little waste from varnish and stain-washing solvents is produced because we use modern UV-curable varnishes and water-based stains. We sort this waste separately into water-based and solvent-based waste containers and deliver it to the appropriate waste management company.
Heating energy
We obtain almost all the heating energy we need by using all the wood waste we generate. The wood waste is burned in two modern combustion boilers in our own heating system. In addition, we save heating energy by recovering heat energy from the exhaust air using heat exchangers. We also use wood waste to generate the heat energy needed in the production processes. During particularly cold winters, we may need to purchase wood chips or sawmill waste from a sawmill, from which we make combustible briquettes. However, all of the heat energy we use comes from 100% renewable sources.
Electricity
The electricity we use is CO2-free (carbon dioxide-free). We have also reduced our electricity consumption by switching to LED lighting.
Electric forklift trucks
Almost all of the forklifts we use are battery-powered electric forklifts, which use night-time electricity to recharge their batteries. Only the most powerful and heavy-duty forklift trucks run on pure LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).
We aim to source raw materials from reliable, preferably domestic suppliers who also take environmental issues into account. All the wood-based raw materials we use in our panel production are FSC certified.
Veneers
We buy our imported wood from reliable suppliers, and all veneers used in our panels are FSC certified. We use veneers in our furniture and panels in a way that minimises raw material waste.
Chipboard
We buy the chipboard we use for our furniture from Finnish suppliers. The raw material used in chipboard is wood chips from the sawmill industry, so the use of chipboard itself favours the ecological and efficient use of the raw materials.
Glues
Our glue supplier is Kiilto Oy, a company specialising in wood industry glues and known for its particularly high quality products. All the adhesives we use are water-soluble.
Varnishes
Our varnish supplier is Sherwin Williams. On our production line, we use water-based and UV-curable varnishes that are completely solvent-free. Spray varnishes and stains are also fully water-soluble.
Packaging
All our products are shipped in recyclable cardboard boxes.
Hand towel roll system
We use Lindström’s eco-labelled replacement towels in our facility. This contributes to reducing paper waste.
